Treasurer Nick Bygrave retires
The Committee would like to say a huge thank you to Nick Bygrave, the Club Treasurer, who has recently moved to Bexhill. Nick joined the club in 1997 and, until recently, was a regular Thursday morning player with the senior men’s group. He was elected Treasurer at the last AGM and has been hugely contributive in recording all the financial information for the club. Beyond that, Nick wrote the programme that assists John Brotherhood with the Thursday rota, kept all the club database records up to date, designed and updated the PBTC website, and sent out all emails to club members – including all membership renewals every April. Nick has worked tirelessly behind the scenes and the degree of his contribution can be judged by the fact it has taken three people to replace him! Geoff Green has kindly taken over the Honorary Treasurer position, Chris Kennedy has taken over the responsibility for the club web site, and Martin Hopgood is now managing the database and sending out the emails to club members. I am sure you will join me in wishing Nick, and his wife Brenda, a relaxing time in sunny Bexhill.
Communication changes at the club
Following on from the announcement above, you will notice changes in the way you receive emails in the future, which will now be sent out through Mail Chimp. Martin will develop the system over time, and we hope this will lead to good quality information reaching you about all club matters, from tennis to social events.
Chris Kennedy is currently working on the new club web site, and we will announce when it is to be launched. Chris is also keen to extend and update the branding for Purley Bury Tennis Club, which will include availability of logo’d tennis wear – watch this space!
Infrastructure and maintenance improvements at the club
The Committee is pleased to advise that some considerable works to improve the electrical infrastructure at the club have commenced. Outside light fittings have been replaced in preparation for changes to the fuse board. The following items have been approved to go ahead and will commence as soon as possible:
- The floodlight pylon heads will be serviced, and all of thefloodlight bulbs will be replaced at once except those that have been replaced very recently. This will give a regular spread of light across the courts and we hope will prevent the bulbs failing one at a time.
- The replacement for one bulb on court two is in hand and will be done shortly.
- One pylon needs straightening, which may be a big job.
- The three remaining old token boxes are to be replaced imminently, this will resolve the problem of tokens falling through.
Grateful thanks for the working party on 19th August, arranged by Sarah Wilson and Mark Love!
Sarah and Mark would like to say thank you for the fantastic support from those that were able to help (in the rain for part of it) – Sarah, Lynne, Pete & Val, Kelly, Steph, Amy, and the 5 juniors that helped carry the bags to the car park. David Stantiall did a huge amount of work at the start of the week. The Sawyers took the bags to the dump and did the front flower bed. Mark said ‘Most of us finished up at 6.30pm but Val and Sarah were still going at it until nearly 7.30pm!’ It is efforts like this that keep the club looking great – please support the working parties and join in the next one if you can.
Membership survey
The committee wishes to ensure that the requirements of the membership are met at all times. As a result, a survey has been commissioned to seek your views on how the club is run, and if you are satisfied with what you receive from the club relative to your category of membership. For the committee to be able to assess your views, and to take action to implement the findings of the survey, it is vital that as many people as we can possibly reach complete the survey honestly. The survey is anonymous, and a great opportunity to air your views. Please kindly take the time to complete it when you receive it. Many thanks.

Tennis
A mixed box league will run from October 2016. Watch out for more details from Ali.
We have received a complaint from one of our neighbours about our courts being in use at 0630hrs in the morning, and the noise the players were making. The courts should not be used before 0800hrs in the morning and we expect our members to be considerate to our neighbours at all times. We would appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
Social Events

Davis Cup
This is the last day of the Semi Final of the Davis Cup. Last Years Davis Cup was an exciting spectator event at PBTC club house and this year should be the same. This Semi Final should end with Murray V Del Potro who are two of the most on form players on the planet.
Ivan will be opening the bar at 1200hrs for the 1300hrs televised start of play.
Saturday 8th October at 1930hrs (prompt)
The PBTC Quiz
Pam will be hosting the PBTC quiz at the Clubhouse. We always welcome new quizzers to impress us with good general and specialised knowledge. Teams of up to 6 but if you don’t have a team perhaps we can match you with others that are in the same predicament. The bar will be open to help loosen those facts from within and half way through we’ll have fish and chips and a pudding.
Contact Pam Hart on pammhart@hotmail.co.uk as soon as possible to take part.
